After the Ride for Rebound – reflecting on why we rode and why we will ride again.

Ride for Rebound 2021

Ride for Rebound is an initiative jump-started by Cobourg Police Chief, Paul VandeGraaf. The Ride brought together avid cyclists who committed to riding with a police escort across the rolling hills of Northumberland County for Rebound Child & Youth Services on June 12, 2021. Due to COVID-19, it was necessary to move the launch date of Ride for Rebound from May 8, 2021 into June.

Chief Paul VandeGraaf developed this ride in partnership with Rebound to emphasize the ripple-effect that our programs and services instill on the children and youth we work with. Ride for Rebound was a chance for community members to get active, experience the beauty of Northumberland County, and work alongside Rebound to positively impact the lives of local children and youth.

Chief Paul VandeGraaf laid down the challenge of each cyclist riding across Northumberland and raising $500 from their personal or professional networks.

 Who riding helps

At Rebound, we are committed to serving all children, youth, and families in Northumberland County with the services they need. Our clients thrive through participating in evidence-based approaches that are constantly developing to ensure that they are relevant to the ever-changing needs of children and youth in our community. The support of our generous donors and sponsors ensures that we meet the ever-increasing demands of our clients.

Through Ride for Rebound, funds are being raised that allow us to further our mission and help each client pave their own paths for success. As you ride for Rebound, the community is watching and learning about your impact. This establishes new valuable relationships with current and prospective clients – and raises awareness for the work we do at Rebound.

Read the story

Before reaching out to Rebound, a local youth was experiencing mild-to-severe anxiety, undergoing anxiety attacks and losing interest in the activities that they once loved. Sadness began to creep into their life and they started to avoid the situations that caused them anxiety. Specifically, they avoided attending school because they were being bullied and experienced academic challenges. This resulted in the school threating to suspend the youth for missing school and, as a result, their sadness deepened more and more.

After learning about the services that Rebound offers, the youth welcomed the opportunity to meet with one of our skilled counsellors. While meeting with the counsellor weekly, the youth slowly grew more comfortable and began to rediscover the activities they once enjoyed, and even developed new ones like graphic art and advocacy for social issues.

This youth began to find motivation during their time at Rebound, seeking ways to create a new pathway for themselves. They were able to use the talents they discovered to find areas of joy and happiness in their life. Now a graphic artist who is earning an income by selling their art, the youth has also become a strong advocate for LGBTQ2+ youth.

After their time with Rebound, it was clear that the youth had grown and learned how to manage their anxiety. Now, social events are being attended by the youth with confidence, friendships are being built, and their anxiety attacks no longer have control over them.

“Knowing there was someone in your corner, we weren't alone. So many agencies were against us... we were judged and poked, it was all negative. The experience with Rebound was different. Even if it was just a little thing, you guys made it feel important…”

– CUIP Family

 Why we will ride again

Every dollar raised through the Ride for Rebound goes directly to supporting children, youth, and families in Northumberland County. For many of us, this is the county that we call home – so the impact really does hit close to home.

Rebound supports over 1,400 clients across Northumberland County every year, working with people from every community:

603 children and youth with mental health support

452 children and youth with skills-building group programs

118 children and youth with literacy and learning help

92 youth with Youth Justice Diversion programs

46 youth with Trusteeship programs

91 families with parenting support

Ranging from ages 7-18, the children and youth we serve are provided with excellent programs and services that help them find motivation for the future, and paints the picture of a bright path ahead. By taking a holistic approach to generating this success, one of our values, Ripple-Effect, demonstrates that clients and their families can grow together through these programs and services.

Ride for Rebound will be returning in 2022 and we can’t wait to cheer you on again – only this time, hopefully in person.
