Rebound's Fall Newsletter

“I would like to thank the staff and intake team for helping me and my child throughout the pandemic. They gave us an alternative way to communicate and helped tremendously. From day one, improving communication began to manifest with the tools that were suggested to us. Our little family is better off today because of the genuine care you showed towards my child and me. Thank you so much for helping us navigate through the storm.” – From a Parent

An Overview

As the cooler months and shorter days rapidly approach, we are happy to welcome the community into our bright welcoming space. With tutoring, counselling and therapy, skills building, emotion regulation programs, Triple P Positive Parenting programs, FASD Caregiver Support Group and so much more all happening in person yet again, we almost can’t imagine a time when our lives were completely virtual. With this in mind, and understanding we are in an aggressive cold and flu season, we’re hopeful to be able to continue serving the Rebound community flexibly in person and virtually for the foreseeable future. We encourage our clients and visitors to mask if they are comfortable doing so to remain responsive and accommodating to all who wish to benefit from our services.

Executive Director’s Message

I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of an organization that really makes a difference in people’s lives. Every day I come into work, I get to witness first-hand how hard our skilled team works to positively impact young people and their families. There is not a week that goes by that we don’t help a young person struggling with thoughts of suicide, crippling anxiety, and overwhelming sadness to develop coping skills, strategies, resiliency, and self-esteem. The number of youths in this vulnerable state continues rise, making the need for our services ever more important. Rebound has a safe, caring, open space for young people and their families to come to, we can support them to change their narrative to create a more positive tomorrow.

There are so many individual stories of lives positive changed that I could share with you – like the young woman who didn’t attend school for several years due to crippling anxiety,  and who, with our support has graduated high school and is now in college; or the young man that we helped find safe, supportive housing and who has now graduated college and is engaged to be married; or the young lady who overcame incredibly challenging personal and family circumstances, earning our prestigious Lynn McMillan Resiliency Bursary; or indeed the many young people whose grades and self-confidence have skyrocketed thanks to the legion of dedicated volunteers who work in our READbound tutoring program.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the many caring and loving families that have taken advantage of our expanded parenting supports through our Family Wellness hub, to build a strong family foundation to support their children as they navigate what still remains an incredibly challenging time. These stories would warm your heart – they are what continue to propel us forward with passion and commitment each day!

Don’t hesitate to reach out – we are here for you and for that special young person you know. Visit rcys.ca to learn about how we can help.

Rebound’s Professional Development Event for Tutor Volunteers

The evening of November 7 was a special one for Rebound’s literacy tutors, who were treated to a fantastic presentation by two leading professionals crusading the Structured Literacy approach to teaching reading. Psychological Associate Ashley Olver and Speech-Language Pathologist Natalie Smith visited the Rebound space to share their expertise with tutors and caregivers about some of the most progressive and cutting-edge approaches to assist young readers in their quest to become strong, confident readers. We were so very privileged to be able to offer our volunteers this opportunity and we can’t thank Ashley and Natalie enough for their time and passion.
