READbound Literacy
Many children and youth struggle with academics, experiencing educational barriers in reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar, phonics and math. Low self-esteem and behavioural problems may develop, as their unconscious coping mechanism takes over, in the traditional learning environment. Some children/youth will attempt to portray their understanding of literature, while internally struggling with reading and writing while others will avoid all tasks associated with literacy. Either way, one is dependent on peers or parents interpreting for them.
Rebound Child & Youth Services matches the interests of the community volunteer Tutor and the personalities of child/youth to “match" a tutoring partnership. Instruction is arranged in a neutral environment such as the Rebound offices, a community centre, a church, the library, a sports complex or public place. Each lesson in individually constructed with emphasis on diversity in materials and methods. Volunteers will commit 2-5 hours per week with their student. This may be arranged in several short periods or in longer periods, incorporating hands-on learning experiences with planned activities. Outings and explorations are encouraged, with trips to the Science Centre, galleries, museums, nature walks, sports events, including personal interests and activities. This positive mentoring relationship often yields many interpersonal successes.
READbound is a goal-oriented educationally based program, with the initial goals determined at time of intake, based on the identified needs of the child, parent and school. Goals may include: the ability to read fluently, advancement to the next grade in school, improved reading comprehension, improved writing (formatting, spelling and grammar) skills, completing the government literacy testing, filling out job applications/legal papers/banking forms, or increased understanding in subject areas including: mathematics, science, history or French.
